WWW FAQs: When was the World Wide Web invented?

2004-12-01: Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau's official proposal for the World Wide Web is dated November 12th, 1990. This is the first document that actually uses the term.

In 1989, Berners-Lee and Cailliau had separately presented ideas for a hypertext system for their employer, the CERN nuclear physics research facility in Switzerland.

In early 1991 Berners-Lee wrote the first web browser.
