How to use Wusage in Simple Mode.
To run Wusage you must have the Wusage program and your http log files.
Contact your ISP, Host, IT department or webmaster and ask for your http log
file location or for the files to be put on the server so you can run Wusage against them to
produce the example stats
you see on our website.
Here are some basics:
- 1. Get Wusage from our website
and download Wusage onto your hard drive. Here's how....
- Go to our download
page to get the version of Wusage we offer for your operating system.
- Click on the appropriate link for your operating system.
- A dialog box comes up that says do you want to run from this location
or save this to disk.
- Windows Users:
Choose Run this from its location and allow Wusage to install on your
hard drive.
You will be prompted through questions about accepting the terms of our
licensing agreement. Click the appropriate responses for your situation.
-
Unix Users:
Choose Save this file to disk and then pick the folder where you
would like to save Wusage in and click ok.
Next unix users will need to use the commands found here to
unpack and untar
the program and then use the
./wusage command to launch the program. The program will give you a url
to put in the url field of your browser. Now you are ready to use Wusage. The Wusage interface
will prompt you and take you through some short questions. Please read questions and answer appropriately.
- 2. Overview: How to get statistics from Wusage:
- Wusage produces the statistical info you see in these
example results
by analyzing the information in your http traffic log files.
- You get these log files by accessing your server via ftp or downloading the log files
locally to your hard drive. If your server still has your log files then use a client like FTP
to provide Wusage the location of your log files. Read on.
- I access my server via FTP. I have a user name and password set up already as I upload my html documents
via FTP.
- You or your webmaster most likely does this also. You need to know how to
access the server via FTP, what the user name and password is for your account
and in what folder your log files are kept. Now that you have this info we can go onto
the next step.
- 3. Questions?
- Now you should have Wusage installed.
- If you are having issues installing Wusage after reading this through,
please email us.
- 4. Choose from the Administration page the Mode you want.
- For this example please pick Simple Mode.
- 5. Now you will tell Wusage where your log files are located.
- You have two choices: remote access via FTP or local access using your directory
structure provided through the Wusage interface.
- To configure Wusage to use FTP to get your logs, you will need to fill in the
FTP information in the fields next to FTP site information. Specifically,
server, username and password.
- You can also download the files locally onto your harddrive and run
Wusage manually. This is more intrusive on your time and is not the preferred method.
Make a choice and fill in the appropriate details for your choice.
- Analyzing log files remotely(ftp) via Wusage.
To use an FTP client you will need to know the following:
_____________________ FTP Site
_____________________ FTP User
_____________________ FTP Password
_____________________ FTP Directory or File
Enter the name of the FTP site where your log files are kept, as well as the
correct user name and password. Also enter the correct directory, if you know
this information already. You will then be able to browse the FTP site and select
the folder or file with your http log data.
- Analyzing log files locally requires you to look at your directory structure within the
Wusage interface and navigate through your directory structure until you find the appropriate
file or folder containing your http logs.
- Local log folder/files should be kept in the same folder where copy of Wusage resides.
I would name the log folder logs and remember that you will need to
regularly rotate in new log files and rotate out old log files, archiving them
at the location of your choice. Use the directory structure provided to locate your log
files on your hard drive. This is why FTP remote analyzation is less intrusive on your time.
- 6.Update Statistics
- After you have done this the program interface will take you to the Control Page and
there will be an update statistics button. You must click on update statistics at least one
time before you will be able to view any of your web site statistics. The first run
will take a few minutes, or more if you have a large site or a backlog of log files.
Then when the analyzation is complete click view statistics now. Your calendar of reports may
appear behind the Wusage GUI so minimize the Wusage GUI and then you will be able to navigate through
the calendar and the reports.
- 7. What information should I look for?
- If you are looking at what is the most accurate click thru number, there
are page views, top referring sites, top referring URLs and
look at the Top Visitor Sites link in the navigation frame.
Also you'll see them in "referring URLs by document", certainly. For the
greatest accuracy you could look into the "clickthrough.cgi" section
of our manual, which requires more effort but doesn't rely on the
browser's willingness to supply a referring URL.
- To be sure you are getting all the info you need
I suggest that you go look at the "documents by directory"
subreport of your most recent week, and see if it includes everything
you're concerned about.
- If your "subwebs" are subdirectories of a single web site they are probably
all represented already.
Use the online manual
to get detailed information on definitions and specific details on all the features
of Wusage.
