11/05/01: Wusage 7.1 P27a Released for Windows
Wusage 7.1 P27a corrects a problem which affects ONLY users of Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows ME. Users of Windows NT, 2000 and XP do not need this fix. The problem caused scheduled updates to fail; users affected by this problem see Windows error notification dialog boxes pop up periodically once an update is scheduled to occur. Users of Windows NT and its descendants do not experience this problem.11/01/01: Wusage 7.1 P27 Released for Windows
Wusage 7.1 P27 corrects several difficulties observed in the field under Microsoft Windows-family operating systems only. Tests on non-Windows operating systems have so far failed to reproduce these issues, which are largely specific to the concerns of ISP mode users. The issues are:
- Occasional service crashes during log archiving corrected
- Lockup of service or GUI during removal of an ISP mode account corrected

Wusage 7.1 P26win corrects several difficulties observed under Microsoft Windows-family operating systems only.10/08/01: Wusage 7.1 P26 Released for Many Operating Systems
Wusage 7.1 P26 is now available for Linux, Solaris Sparc and Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000, with additional ports arriving regularly.Wusage 7.1 P26 addresses the following issues:
- In rare cases, work-in-progress databases of certain precise sizes would be misread upon the next run of Wusage, resulting in a failure of the program. This problem has been corrected. As the problem was in the reading of the databases and not in the databases themselves, replacing your current release with 7.1 P26 is sufficient to correct fully correct it.
- An explanatory file placed in the wusage-macros folder under the user's home directory was, under some operating systems, strangely named, not created at all or the source of a program failure. This infrequent problem has also been corrected.
07/23/01: Wusage 7.1 P24 Released for Many Operating Systems
Wusage 7.1 P24 is now available for Linux and Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000, with additional ports arriving regularly.Wusage 7.1 P24 addresses the following issues:
- Windows users: network server paths (double-slash paths) now work correctly for all tested situations, including log file access (single file and directory), configuration file, and report directory.
- The "Referrers by Document" report now works correctly for reporting periods longer than a single day. Daily reports were always correct; however, referrers by document were not correctly "folded in" to longer reporting periods (weekly, monthly, etc.) in previous patchlevels of Wusage 7.1.
07/16/01: Wusage 7.1 P23 Released for Many Operating Systems
Wusage 7.1 P23 is now available for Linux and Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000, with additional ports arriving regularly.Wusage 7.1 P23 addresses the following issues:
- FTP log downloads exceeding 4 minutes in length now work properly. An important fix for those performing analysis via FTP.
- Wusage can now be run correctly in ISP mode by several distinct Unix accounts on the same Unix/Linux system. Previously this caused occasional filename collisions in /tmp.
- Potential file descriptor leaks have been closed, increasing overall stability. Should prevent "unable to write to .wusagerc" and similar warnings.
- Spurious empty email reports for newly-begun weeks, etc. are no longer sent.
- Explicit To: headers are now included in email reports. Some mail servers "punish" messages without such headers by giving them a junk mail-like appearance.
- Windows-specific: the NT service now appends warnings and errors
to
C:\Wusage71\data\log.txt(if the application was installed inC:\Wusage71). Most customers found that our use of the NT event log mechanism created too much clutter.
05/21/01: Wusage 7.1 P22a Released for Linux
Due to an oversight in our release process, Wusage 7.1 P22 for Linux was built with certain debugging options activated, and with the use of shared libraries. Wusage 7.1 P22a is identical, except that the build was created properly, with static libraries for much wider compatibility. This issue did not affect any other operating system.
05/16/01: Wusage 7.1 P22 Released for Many Operating Systems
Wusage 7.1 P22 is now available for Linux and Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000, with additional ports arriving regularly.
7.1 P22 fixed the following problems:
- A limitation of the program regarding long TMP environment variable settings and the configuration editor has been corrected. This allows the configuration file editor to work properly in Windows 2000 and other environments where TMP is fairly long.
- "Update Statistics" and "Regenerate Completely" now appear properly when the administrator has not explicitly selected separate log files. Code in P21 intended to hide these buttons when log files are shared and not rotated was incorrectly assuming that shared log files were the default.
- A file descriptor leak has been corrected. This allows "regenerate completely" and other functions to work properly on the second and subsequent updates in a single run of the program.
04/26/01: Wusage 7.1 P21 Released for Many Operating Systems
Wusage 7.1 P21 is now available for Linux and Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000, with additional ports arriving regularly.
7.1 P21 fixed the following flaws in 7.1 P20:
- "Update Statistics" and related buttons inadvertently hidden in advanced and simple modes when shared log files were specified in ISP mode.
- Current limitations not properly displayed on "overall limits" page.
- Documentation updated to reflect the new features of the "overall limits" page.
7.1 P20 addressed the following issues:
Of course, all of these corrections are included in 7.1 P21.- Better error messages and error handling when configurations or accounts no longer exist or have been damaged.
- Efficiency of FTP log file downloads greatly improved; however, FTP is inherently a poor choice for on-the-fly analysis if you have many separate log files on a single FTP site, as many FTP servers do not tolerate "inspecting" the top of each file as Wusage must do.
- Update buttons on control page hidden in situations where they should not be used.
- Administrator can now hide "regenerate completely", "edit configuration" and/or "update for time period" via the "overall limits" page.
- New configuration files will match Windows 2000 rather than NT 5.0 in the Operating Systems report.
- NT/2000 users: Wusage now logs events, visible through the NT event viewer tool.
- Problems with account editing fixed.
- More thorough application of limitations set via Overall Limits page.
- NT/2000 users: Daylight Savings problem with built-in scheduler fixed.
- Update for Time Period for a single day no longer blanks the enclosing week/month/etc.
- Various minor fixes.
03/29/01: Wusage 7.1 P19 Released for Many Operating Systems
Wusage 7.1 P19 addresses the following issues:- ISP mode users: a problem which prevented accounts from being logged into properly has been repaired. The problem was typically experienced as a failure to accept the correct username and password.
- All versions: the "accesses by day" subreport of the summary report now displays the correct range of dates in the table and in the graph.
- Unix versions: steps have been taken to prevent a scheduled update at 1am (for instance) from colliding with a second attempt to carry out that update at 2am if it has not yet completed. This was only an issue in ISP mode.
- Windows version: shutting down the Wusage NT service should work properly even in the middle of an update. Under certain circumstances, Windows could theoretically still display a warning, but the shutdown will still take place.
- All versions: stability improvements were made.
- All versions: temporary directories created by the program are now correctly removed in the event of a normal shutdown of the program.
- Windows version: the Wusage installation program and the "view statistics" button have been rewritten to use Microsoft's currently recommended techniques for updating the start menu and opening URLs through the default web browser. These changes prevent lockups at install and report-viewing time observed by some Windows Me and Windows 2000 customers.

- Improved error messages.
- The
-speedand-timecommand line options, which override optimization settings, are now implemented and documented.
03/13/01: Wusage 7.1 P17 Released for Many Operating Systems
Wusage 7.1 P17 is now available for Linux and Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000, with additional ports arriving regularly.Wusage 7.1 P17 addresses the following significant issues. Upgrading is recommended.
- A problem which generated the message "Error: unable to seek in file XXX" and caused a premature end of analysis has been corrected.
- Accesses from partial days at the end of the current log file are no longer counted twice in weekly reports, monthly reports, etc. when they appear again on a subsequent run.
- Please note: weekly reports, monthly reports, and so forth now contain data for completed days only. See the "accesses by day" subreport for that week. Take this into account when comparing figures before contacting us.

02/27/01: Wusage 7.1 P16 Released for Windows 95/98/NT/Me/2000 and Linux
Wusage 7.1 P16 is now available for Linux and for the Windows family of operating systems, and is expected within 1-2 weeks for additional operating systems.Wusage 7.1 P16 addresses the following issues.
- Most damaged and otherwise invalid configuration files can be opened by the configuration editor, and some forms of damage are automatically repaired. This is an important fix for ISP mode users.
- Earlier patchlevels could potentially forget some configuration file information when left idle for 20 minutes with the configuration editor open while logged into an individual virtual site account. This issue has been addressed.
- "Console" messages are kept indefinitely and displayed at the bottom of each user interface page when administering the program remotely via the web.
- In the documents by directory report, the percentages displayed next to visit counts are now correct. Pie charts are now automatically turned off if the directories report is sorted by visits, due to the fact that one visit may or may not touch on multiple documents; thus the percentages for individual documents and directories do not and should not sum to 100%.
- When email reporting is activated, reports are now sent only for completed days, weeks, months, etc. The program no longer sends a report each day for each report still in progress, a behavior which was not popular with customers.
02/06/01: Wusage 7.1 P15 Released for Linux and Windows
Wusage 7.1 P15 is now available for Linux systems and the Windows family of operating systems.Wusage 7.1 P15 addresses the following issues.
- ISP mode users: When operating as a Unix daemon (-server flag) or an NT service, the main service no longer becomes confused when users use the OFF button or otherwise cause the sub-service they are communicating with to exit. This is an important fix for users of ISP mode.
- Windows users: 7.1 P15 correctly removes previous versions of the Wusage NT service at install time, allowing the new 7.1 P15 service to be installed correctly. If you had difficulty installing some intervening patchlevels of 7.1, 7.1 P15 should be much easier for you to install correctly.
- Windows users: improved error handling in the installation program.
- Advanced mode users: specifying filenames for report directories and configuration files works properly if the filename begins with file:///, as is often the case when using our browsing features.

01/18/01: Wusage 7.1 P12 Released for Linux and BSDI
7.1 P12 addresses the following issue:- When installing crontab entries for itself, 7.1 P12 specifies the location of the current user's home directory. This ensures that the program's behavior is consistent both when run from the command line and when run from cron. This is particularly relevant for users who choose to run wusage as root. This issue does not affect Windows users; there is no need to release P12 for Windows.

- Improved reliability of web-based login via the
-serveroption - New "fast" search server templates are correctly documented and no longer lost by the configuration editor

7.1 P6 addresses the following issues:- "DNS on" no longer results in analysis failure
- Redundant archiving of the first second of each day has been corrected. This problem, which affected only ISP mode users not using log rotation, resulted in an additional small archival log file being generated each day for each day of the log file, which each successive file larger than the one produced by the previous run. 7.1 P6 will not produce any additional superfluous archive files.
- Directory creation now inherits the permissions of the parent directory; allows easier access to reports if you have chosen to put them in a publicly readable directory, but allows security if you have chosen to put them in an owner-only directory
- New
-update-all-accountsoption updates all remote access accounts, regardless of schedule settings - "Overall limits" correctly applied to remote access accounts only

- True Unix file locking
- Configuration editor no longer inadvertently turns off all reporting frequencies

- When "View Statistics" is clicked and reports are not yet available, a friendlier, more informative error message is now displayed.
- The -server option now automatically detaches to run in the background.
- Maximum values set using the Overall Limits page are now automatically observed by newly created accounts. This prevents the display of confusing and unnecessary warnings in the configuration editor.
How to Fix Accounts Created with 7.1 P1 or P2If you are not receiving error messages saying that no log files were specified, you do not have a problem and you do not need to fix anything. Existing accounts created with P1 or P2 that do exhibit this problem can be deleted and re-created. Alternatively, you can use a text editor to restore the
logfilesoption settings, using a newly created account's configuration file settings as a guide. Account configuration files are named as follows (one line):/home/unix-account-name/wusage-accounts/ wusage-account-name/wusage.confPlease note: this approach is optional! Deleting and recreating the accounts is the simplest approach, if indeed you experienced the problem at all.We apologize for the problem.

10/21/99: BSD per-process memory limit causes Out of Memory errors
Users of BSD-derived Unix systems, such as BSDI and FreeBSD, should be aware that BSD systems severely limit the memory available to each individual program by default. To correct this problem, execute the commandlimit datasize unlimited or the
command unlimit before launching the wusage
program on a BSD-based system. Similar issues may exist on other Unix-based
operating systems. Please check for such issues before reporting the
Out of Memory message to boutell.com.

7/7/99: Wusage 6.0 P41 for Windows 95/98/NT
A problem in Wusage 6.0 P40 prevented parts of the configuration editor from working correctly. This problem has been corrected in P41. P41 for Windows is available for downloading here.6/21/99: Wusage 6.0 P40 for Windows 95/98/NT
Recent patchlevels of Wusage for Windows require that the program be unlocked separately for each user. This is a good thing. However, the "AT" command scheduling service runs all programs under the user name SYSTEM, and it is not possible to log in to unlock the software as the user SYSTEM.Patchlevel 40 corrects this problem. When Wusage is run as the user SYSTEM, it checks the same files that are used for the user Administrator. In order to run the software using the AT command, be sure to unlock the software while logged in as Administrator. If you have already done so, Wusage will immediately begin working properly with the AT command when you download and install P40. You will not need to unlock the software again. P40 for Windows is available for downloading here.
6/18/99: Wusage 7.0 to be released soon
Wusage 7.0 is coming soon. Feel free to examine the 7.0 features list. All Wusage 6.0 keys sold on or after March 1st, 1999, will also be accepted by Wusage 7.0. Wusage 6.0 P39 corrects a problem which prevented the DNS option from being saved correctly by the configuration editor. In addition, Wusage 6.0 P39 allows the order of reports to be changed correctly in the Windows 95/98/NT user interface, and the report order interface has been generally improved. P39 also incorporates fixes which allow the Macintosh version to function more reliably. For Windows NT administrators who offer Wusage as a CGI program, Wusage 6.0 P39 now automatically times out after 20 minutes if it is not used, in order to prevent overuse of system resources. P39 for many platforms is available for downloading here.5/14/99: Wusage 6.0 P38 for Windows 95/98/NT
Previous releases of Wusage 6.0 for Windows 95/98/NT used the CPU very aggressively, even while the graphical user interface was idle. Wusage 6.0 P38 corrects this problem. This problem did not affect the web-based user interface or the command-line interface, and it did not affect other operating systems. P38 for Windows 95/98/NT is available for downloading here.4/12/99: Wusage 6.0 P36 for Windows 95/98/NT
Wusage 6.0 P36 for Windows 95/98/NT can be used as a CGI program. If it is run in a CGI environment, it will automatically respond as a web server, rather than responding as a GUI application. P36 for Windows 95/98/NT is available for downloading here.4/12/99: Wusage 6.0 P35 for Windows 95/98/NT
Wusage 6.0 P35 carefully avoids a rare problem with certain Windows configurations. Users who experienced this problem found that uninstalling Wusage caused the standard Windows application uninstall program to be overwritten. This problem has been fixed and should not occur in future releases, regardless of the temporary directory setting on your computer.3/30/99: Wusage 6.0 P34 for Windows 95/98/NT
Wusage 6.0 P34 corrects the following problems:- Previous releases could not read IIS W3C format log entries
reliably from standard input (the
-l -command line option). - Previous releases did not handle occasional bad IIS W3C format log entries gracefully.
- Certain valid IIS W3C log formats were mistaken for the older Microsoft IIS log format, resulting in incomplete results and/or implausible dates.
3/22/99: Wusage 6.0 P33 for Windows 95/98/NT
Wusage 6.0 P32 corrects a problem which prevented P31 from handling filenames containing colons. Since colons appear frequently in paths under Windows, such asC:\Program Files\Wusage, we fixed this
problem quickly. You can download P33
for Windows 95/98/NT here. Because regular web browsers
are already quite tolerant of the : character anywhere in a
URL, this problem did not occur in our tests on other
operating systems such as MacOS. P32 did not
completely repair this problem. If you downloaded P32
this weekend, pick up P33 to get the complete fix.
3/19/99: Wusage 6.0 P31 for Many Platforms
Wusage 6.0 P31 corrects a number of significant flaws in recent patchlevels and improves other areas of functionality.

Wusage 6.0 for Windows 95, 98 and NT is now available with a native graphical user interface. The interface is consistent with the web interface used on other platforms, while taking full advantage of Windows file selection dialog boxes and other features that increase the friendliness of the product. This release also features a built-in scheduler, making it easy for users who do not wish to master a special scheduling facility such as the NT AT command. All of the standard command-line features are still available, and the web interface can be activated using a special command-line option. This new release is available as a self-extracting executable for greater ease of installation. We will make the non-GUI fixes included in P26 available for other platforms shortly. - The "trailswith" option can now be edited correctly through the user interface.
- Attention power users of Wusage 5.0: The
-eoption now assumes the last week (or month) being analyzed is complete as long as the date specified is the last day of the week (or month). 8/5/98: Patchlevel 16 for Windows 95, 98 and NT
Patchlevel 16 has been released to correct flaws and documentation oversights in the behavior of theclickthrough.exe
utility when used with Microsoft Internet Information Server.
The flaw was this: the "query" was not being properly added back on to the URL when parsing a W3C extended format log file.
The documentation oversight was this: Wusage "un-escapes" URLs before analyzing them. So, in your pattern, it is necessary to show the original, unescaped destination URL, like so:
/cgi-bin/tools/clickthrough.exe?CR=http://www.boutell.com/
The instructions presented by clickthrough.exe did
not include this important information. These problems
are fixed in patchlevel 16, which
can be downloaded from our download page.
7/20/98: Unlucky Patchlevel 13; Patchlevel 14 Is Out
As some people may have anticipated, patchlevel 13 had a problem: if you are presented your log data at standard input using the -l option, it sometimes crashed. This did not occur when analyzing a specific log file named with the logfile or logdir option. Patchlevel 14 corrects this problem, and it has been made avialable for several platforms.7/16/98: Wusage 6.0 P13 now available

Wusage 6.0 P7 is now available for NetBSD 1.3 running on Intel platforms.5/11/98: Wusage 6.0 P9 Released for Windows 95/NT
Earlier patchlevels of 6.0 could crash if the user's HOMEPATH was not a writable directory. P9 does not use HOMEPATH, and Wusage prints a useful error message and exits if it cannot create the password file. If you are upgrading from an earlier 6.0 release, note that a new remote access password will be generated on the first run of P9. Apologies for this necessary one-time inconvenience.5/8/98: Wusage 6.0 P5 Released for DEC Alpha Linux

- A graphical user interface based on your web browser! Wusage 6.0 contains a built-in web server for the sole purpose of providing a friendly way to configure the program, run your statistics and browse the results.
- 6.0 Remembers where it "left off." You can rotate log files out right after running the program with 6.0. The new -n option can be used to override this behavior, causing the program to behave like wusage 5.0.
- The new directories option presents a breakdown by subdirectory of activity on the web server.
- The manyservers option analyzes many virtual servers together, constructing complete URLs to those servers based to the server name field (this option is useful for those who log many virtual servers to one file).
- Support for the "extended log format" standardized by the W3C and implemented by Microsoft IIS 4.0.
- Support for email reporting.
- Support for spreadsheet-like "functions," such as clickthrough rates, in the totals and totalsgroup options.
- Support for "cookies," user- identifying strings which are logged by the Apache web server.
- Optional breakdown by document of all referring URLs for each document on the server.
- Support for analyzing sites, referring URLs, and more with the totals and totalsgroup options, instead of just documents. This makes it possible to create historical charts of information formerly only available through the "unique" report, which is now obsolete.
- Support for alphabetically sorted reports.
- Automatically keeps only a certain number of reports, if desired.
- Percentages are included in all reports for which this is appropriate.
- Can chart second- or third-level domains instead of top-level domains, if desired.
- User agents (browsers) can be grouped together easily.
- Referring sites report added to help clarify the referring URLs report.
- Visits and trails are now analyzed more efficiently, using much less memory than in 5.0.
- HTTP transfer, FTP transfer, and gzip compression are all supported when retrieving logs! No need to uncompress large log files and/or download them separately to your hard drive. Note that gzip is not identical to zip (however, free gzip and gunzip tools are widely available).
- Internet search keywords report added, based on referring URL data and a configurable set of templates to match various popular Internet search services.
