Starting Wusage under Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP

If you chose to install Wusage in your startup group, then it is probably already running. Just click on the minimized W7 icon in your task bar to access the Wusage user interface. If you did not install Wusage in your startup group, pick the Wusage group from your start menu and launch the Wusage application from there.

SECURITY NOTE

Under Windows NT/2000/XP, we recommend the use of the Windows NT/2000/XP administrator account for initial setup and unlocking of the program only. Under other circumstances there is no need to run the program as a privileged user. However, Wusage is designed not to provide account holders access to any unrelated information when operating in ISP mode.

Starting Wusage under Unix

To run Wusage, just cd to the directory where you untarred or unzipped Wusage, and type ./wusage to start the program.

SECURITY NOTE

We do NOT recommend running the Wusage web-based user interface as root under Unix. Although Wusage is not designed to provide access to any unrelated information, it is never a good idea to run applications as root when this can be easily avoided by using another account.

Starting Wusage as a CGI Program

If you prefer, you can install wusage as a CGI program. ISPs who wish to make the program available to individual web server administrators will definitely need to do this. See Remote Access for One or Many Users for more information.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO RUN WUSAGE ON THE SAME COMPUTER AS YOUR WEB BROWSER! For instance, if you have a shell account or the privilege of installing CGI programs on your ISP's website, then you can run the program on your ISP's computer and save the time and grief of downloading log files to your computer. Just be sure to install the correct version of Wusage for your ISP's operating system.

How to Connect Your Browser

Windows users will not need to connect with a web browser, unless they prefer to do so or wish to provide remote access to many account holders in ISP mode. Wusage automatically installs itself as a Windows NT Service if you answer that question positively when installing the program. To set a username and password for remote access, launch the graphical version of the program, select ISP mode, and select "Edit Administrative Account." You can then log in and do remote administration via any web browser at the URL: http://myservername:2396/

A welcoming message will appear, with instructions to connect your browser to the program. WRITE DOWN the user name and password information that appears the first time you run the program, open the URL that appears with your web browser, and enter the correct name and password.

If you are not able to connect, the host name in the URL Wusage has asked you to open may not be exactly correct. This happens when a computer is not configured to supply this information correctly. Just use the correct name or IP address for the computer on which you are running wusage.
