Do I Have the Latest Version?
To find out, visit the See This Home Page on Boutell.Com, Inc.'s website. What is See This?
See This is a software program which allows you to send anything on your screen to anyone on the Internet, any time you want to. Are you working on a graphic design project for a client? Would you like to be able to quickly send out snapshots of your work in progress? See This is a great way to "grab" part of your screen and promptly display it on another person's desktop. And if that person doesn't have their own copy of See This, they can still receive the image by email! Email is also used automatically if the recipient is not connected to the Internet at the time you send them the picture. What's new in this version?
Version 1.0 is the initial release. How do I get started?
The first time you run See This, you will be asked to provide several pieces of information, as described below.Email Settings
The first dialog box will ask you for for your email address, and for the location of your outgoing SMTP mail server."Why should I provide my email address?"
Providing your email address allows you to receive images when you are not connected to the Internet. You don't want to miss important See This correspondence every time you disconnect from the net.
"What is my SMTP outgoing mail server? Why do I need to provide that information?"
Your outgoing mail server is the computer that all mail programs, such as Microsoft Outlook (tm) and Netscape Messenger (tm), must contact in order to send your messages to the rest of the world. By providing this information, you allow See This to deliver images to recipients who are not connected to the Internet at the moment. You can also send images to recipients who do not have the See This software, simply by entering email addresses instead of See This nicknames. All of these great features are only available if you provide the mail server information.
You will be prompted for this information the first time you use the software. Later, you can change your proxy server settings by clicking on the Settings button and selecting the Email Settings option from the list of categories at the top of the Settings dialog box.
Proxy Server Settings
Is your computer located behind a company "firewall" that limits incoming and outgoing traffic? In that case, you will need a See This proxy server in order to use the software. Your system administrator can install the See This proxy server software on the firewall. The proxy server software is freely available on Boutell.Com, Inc.'s website.A See This proxy server is NOT THE SAME THING as an HTTP proxy server. You cannot use an HTTP proxy server as a See This proxy server. If you do have a See This proxy server available to you, check the "use proxy server" box and fill in the proxy server host name and port number. This information will be provided by your system administrator.
You will be prompted for this information the first time you use the software. Later, you can change your proxy server settings by clicking on the Settings button and selecting the Proxy Settings option from the list of categories at the top of the Settings dialog box.
Nickname Settings
In order to communicate with other See This users, you will need to pick a "nickname" for yourself. You must also set a nickname password. This information is recorded and automatically transmitted with your nickname to verify that the nickname actually belongs to you. WRITE YOUR NICKNAME PASSWORD DOWN! YOU WILL WANT IT AGAIN IF YOU CHANGE COMPUTERS.
Your nickname can be up to 79 characters, but we recommend you pick a short, memorable name your friends and associates can easily remember.
Keep in mind that many nicknames are already in use, so your first choice may not be available. If it is not available, the See This nickname server will let you know. If this occurs, set a different nickname.
You will be prompted for this information the first time you use the software. Later, you can change your proxy server settings by clicking on the Settings button and selecting the Nickname Settings option from the list of categories at the top of the Settings dialog box.
Dialup Settings
Are you connected to the Internet every moment that your computer is turned on? For most people, especially people who use modems, the answer is no.If you pick "no," See This will not attempt to use your Internet connection to receive images until you actually establish an Internet connection yourself. This is usually correct for people with modems.
If you pick "yes," See This will assume that you are ALWAYS connected, and that your personal Internet "IP address" will not change at any time during the operation of the program. This is generally true for users of local area networks.
You will be prompted for this information the first time you use the software. Later, you can change your proxy server settings by clicking on the Settings button and selecting the Dialup Settings option from the list of categories at the top of the Settings dialog box.
How do I send pictures?
Now that you have configured your copy of See This, you are ready to send pictures to other users!First, get the picture you want onto your screen, using the software of your choice. You can capture anything from any program. Just get the picture to appear on your screen, in any application you wish.
Next, click on the Send button in the See This window. If the See This window is not already displayed on your screen, click on the See This icon in the system tray.
Next, read the prompt which explains how to capture a picture, and click OK to dismiss the prompt.
Now, click the left mouse button twice, in opposite corners of the picture you want to send..
Using a Nickname for Instant Delivery
After you capture your picture, you will be presented with a dialog box asking you to choose a recipient. Enter the See This nickname of one of your associates who would like to see the picture. If you have not exchanged nicknames yet, you can enter your own nickname, just to practice.
Using Email Addresses
Alternatively, you can also enter an email address to send to, instead of a nickname. If See This recognizes an @ character, it will automatically send the picture as an email attachment, instead of trying to communicate with another copy of See This. Also, be sure to fill in the Subject field! The subject field makes it easier for your associates to understand why you have sent them a particular picture. A few words of explanation can make all the difference!
When you have finished filling in the "Send To Nickname OR Email Address" and Subject fields, click the OK button to send your image. If you change your mind, you can click on Cancel.
See This will deliver your image "in the background." If the message is delivered successfully (either directly or by email), you will not see any special reaction from the program. If, however, delivery is not successful, you will be notified of the problem when it occurs.
Sometimes, if your message has been delivered directly to another copy of See This, the other user will choose to send a text reply. When and if this occurs, the text reply will pop up on your screen.
How do I receive pictures?
Receiving pictures is extraordinarily easy! Just give your nickname to your associates who wish to send you pictures. If you are running See This when another user chooses to send you a picture, the image will appear on your screen shortly after they send it.Note: if the image is larger than the window, you can use the scrollbars at the right and bottom of the image to scroll to other parts of the image.
If you wish to commend on an image that has been sent to you, just click on the Reply button. You will be given an opportunity to write a short comment. When you click OK, the reply will be sent.
When you are done looking at an image, just click the Close button.
"How do I save a picture to disk?"
Just click on the Save button in the dialog box that displays the picture. You will be prompted for a filename. Please note that the image is saved in JPEG format. All web browsers, and most graphics programs, can understand images in JPEG format.
Note: JPEG is a "lossy" format, which means that the saved version of an image is not identical to the original. That makes it wonderful for quick transmission of pictures, which is what See This was designed for. However, it is not ideal for editing production-quality graphics, so you will probably want to obtain a copy of the image in a lossless format such as TIFF or PNG if you plan to do extensive editing. See This is primarily intended as a fast way to take a look at a work in progress.
