3/7/00: Morning Paper version 1.92 is now available. Morning Paper 1.92 works with or without support for dialup networking on the computer on which it is installed. Morning Paper version 1.92 is available on our download page. This is a free upgrade.

3/4/00: Morning Paper version 1.91 is now available. Morning Paper 1.91 supports "dial on demand" for modem users who wish the program to call out automatically, summarize web pages, and hang up at times when the computer is not already connected to the net. Morning Paper version 1.91 is available on our download page. This is a free upgrade.

9/28/99: Morning Paper version 1.9 is now available. Morning Paper 1.9 permits summaries to be generated more often. In addition, version 1.9 corrects a problem with the offline registration form. Morning Paper version 1.9 is available on our download page. This is a free upgrade.

4/12/99: Morning Paper version 1.81 is now available. Morning Paper 1.81 carefully avoids a rare problem with certain Windows configurations. Users who experienced this problem found that uninstalling Morning Paper caused the standard Windows application uninstall program to be overwritten. This problem has been fixed and should not occur in future releases, regardless of the temporary directory setting on your computer. Morning Paper version 1.81 is available on our download page. This is a free upgrade.

10/4/98: Morning Paper version 1.8 is released.

  • URLs can be imported from Netscape bookmarks, from Microsoft Internet Explorer favorites, and also from plain text and HTML documents.
  • URLs can be exported to a nicely formatted HTML document.
  • Various improvements for first-time users.
8/14/98: Morning Paper version 1.7.3 is released.
  • Proxy servers that require authentication can be used. To enter your proxy server user name and password, pick Proxy Settings from the selector of the Settings dialog box.
  • We have improved the behavior of the program when the cancel button is pressed.
  • The program does not consider pages to be new merely because of whitespace or capitalization changes.
  • "alt" text associated with images is now included in the analysis.
7/17/98: Morning Paper version 1.7.2 is released. Version 1.7.2 tolerates additional types of bad HTML, such as "<font size=>" (note the lack of any actual number for the size).

6/5/98: Morning Paper version 1.7.1 is released. Version 1.7.1 restores the option to ignore a proxy server for a particular site, which stopped working in 1.7.

6/2/98: Morning Paper version 1.7 is released. Version 1.7 supports summaries by email and also corrects flaws, improving the overall stability of the program.

5/6/98: Morning Paper version 1.6.1 is released. Version 1.61 saves settings more often, handles daylight savings time correctly, and does a better job locating the preferred web browser.

4/27/98: Morning Paper version 1.6 is released. Version 1.6 has the following new features:

  • An option is provided to cut short at your preferred summary length. By default, this option is turned on.
  • Optional "fancy formatting" (turned on by default). This option preserves some of the emphasis and page structure of the page being summarized.
  • Links to the actual pages now optionally open a new browser window. This is also turned on by default.
  • If no browser is running, Morning Paper now launches the default web browser according to the setting in the registry. It is no longer necessary to set this separately.
  • Morning Paper installs properly on Windows NT, even if the installation directory name contains spaces.
  • A problem which caused difficulties generating more than one summary in a single run has been fixed.
4/4/98: Morning Paper version 1.5.2 is released. Version 1.5.2 immediately saves changes such as the deletion or movement of URLs in the list, in order to avoid the possible loss of this information if the program is not closed down gracefully later. Version 1.5.2 also provides better registration prompts when the program expires.

3/27/98: Morning Paper version 1.5.1 is released. Version 1.5.1 corrects a problem which caused earlier versions to occasionally open more than one browser window, or in rarer cases, to display a cascade of dialog boxes. Thanks to registered users Michele and Stevi for helping to track this down.

3/12/98: Morning Paper version 1.5 is released. Version 1.5 adds menus for the convenience of keyboard users. Version 1.5 also starts up as a normal window when run from its own program group, rather than the startup group.

1/14/98: Morning Paper version 1.44 is released. This version corrects a problem that prevented Morning Paper 1.4 through 1.43 from correctly displaying only new material. Every URL that had been added to the program appeared to be new every time, except for URLs that were present before upgrading to version 1.4. This problem is now fixed in version 1.44. We apologize for the problem.

1/12/98: Morning Paper version 1.41 is released. This version corrects a problem that prevented version 1.4 from reporting communications errors gracefully. This problem produced confusing reports in version 1.4 (fixed in 1.41).

1/10/98: Morning Paper version 1.4 is released. These are the new features:

  • Analyzes 5 URLs at once! This has greatly improved the overall speed of the program. Morning Paper no longer spends its time waiting for one slow site at a time.
  • "Temporary files" in the C:\ directory are no longer used.
  • Additional tags are recognized when generating summaries.
  • The main window now pops into the foreground properly.
  • The newspaper is automatically opened at the end of the summary if "Summarize Now" was used to start the summary.
1/2/98: Morning Paper version 1.31 is released. This version offers the following improvements:
  • The progress display is streamlined, and it automatically appears below the main display where it is less inconvenient.
  • Morning Paper no longer launches unnecessary extra copies of Netscape when viewing the summary.
  • Now compatible with certain web servers that do not implement the HTTP standard completely.
  • Minimizing the main display while a host name is being looked up in a summary no longer crashes the program.
  • Morning Paper can be resized, maximized, etc.
  • The space used for the unlock and register buttons is now reclaimed when the software has been registered.
Note to registered users: you do NOT have to register again. Just download version 1.31 and unlock it with the same key. Enjoy!

12/7/97: Morning Paper version 1.3 is released. This version can be minimized while a summary is in progress. It is also possible to pop the window up during an automatically scheduled summary in order to see the progress window.

12/4/97: Morning Paper version 1.24 is released. This version FIXES a problem with certain frames-based sites, which can now be analyzed just fine.

11/26/97: Morning Paper version 1.22 is released. This version FIXES a problem which prevented NT 4 users from unlocking the software. If you are an NT 4 user you will need to download this version to unlock the software after purchasing a registration key.

11/17/97: Morning Paper version 1.2 is released. This version adds the following features:

  • Pages with frames can be summarized! You no longer need to manually determine the URLs of frames.
  • http:// is assumed if a URL is entered without a protocol.
Version 1.2 is not yet compatible with NT 3.5.1. NT 4 or Windows 95 is currently required. We do intend to make a release which is compatible with NT 3.5.1.

11/3/97: Morning Paper is currently not compatible with NT 3.5.1. This is because NT 3.5.1 does not respond to the "toolbar" control used in Morning Paper. We will fix this problem soon, and make a new release which is compatible with NT 3.5.1. Morning Paper is already compatible with NT 4.

11/1/97: Morning Paper 1.11 is released. This version corrects the following bugs:

  • Proliferation of temporary files (FIXED)
  • HTTP "cookies" on disk got larger and larger (FIXED)
  • Timeout didn't always work (FIXED)

10/30/97: Morning Paper 1.1 is released. This version adds support for FTP URLs and HTTP "cookies." Also, the output is much improved, it is easier to reorganize your URLs, and you can browse old reports!
