Innnards: Is there a YouTube for audio files?

As the author of the WWW FAQ, I regularly answer questions about the workings of the Web. If a question is frequently asked, I simply add an article to the FAQ. But sometimes a question is more detailed, more in-depth— not really a FAQ, but still of interest to others. You'll find those questions, with my answers, here in Innards along with commentary on other web-technology-related topics.

Q. I am currently web administrator for a church website that accrues large MP3 files on a weekly basis (sermons, worships etc). My client has asked me to look for a site where we can host them and our users can access them. I have found a lot of music MP3 file hosting sites but i am looking for a sort of YouTube for MP3s that are not of a specific genre. Can you give me any suggestions?

A. There is currently no well-known "youtube for MP3s." Many have come and gone, probably because of the liability issues involved when people inevitably upload copyrighted music, especially with high quality settings.

A common and rather effective workaround is to create a simple movie with Windows Movie Maker or iMovie, using still photos (or just one still frame) for the video and your MP3 for the audio, then upload that to YouTube. Users respond well to this because they are familiar and comfortable with YouTube. The presence of even a minimal amount of visual content will help engage users who are used to having that component.

Other well-known video hosts, such as Viddler, can also be used in this way.
