Harry & the Potters
A unique test pressing...
Value: $?
The idea is that the Harry Potter from Year 7 and the Harry Potter from Year 4 started a rock band. And now, no one can stop the wizard rock. Harry and the Potters stars: Paul DeGeorge as Harry Year 7, Joe DeGeorge as Harry Year 4. Paul and Joe are brothers. They started this band in the summer of 2002. The legendary tale of their origin goes like this: Joe was planning to have a rock show in the shed in the backyard. People had been invited. But then all the bands cancelled. So that morning, the time was finally appropriate to bust out an idea that had been incubating in Paul's head for some time: Harry and the Potters. That morning, over the course of an hour, Paul and Joe wrote 7 songs. Then, they went out to the shed and practiced them for half an hour. And then, later in the day, they performed them for about 6 people. It was awesome. The place went nuts. Nowadays, they don't just play in sheds, they also play in libraries, bookstores, basements, art galleries, theatres, hot dog jamorees (true story!), and living rooms.

Donor: Deidre Flint
Value: $30 (each of 2 lots)

Two of these CDs (Shuffleboard Queens and Then Again) feature Deirdre's solo work, while the third (Hormonal Imbalance...A Mood Swinging Musical Review!) is an album by The Four Bitchin' Babes, a foursome with a changing line-up which she joined in 2005.
2 Jonathan Coulton CDs
Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow & Smoking Monkey...
Value: $20
Here's a Brooklyn musician who makes music - all by himself in his apartment, totally indie style - that appears to be tailored directly to Star's tastes: it tends to be silly stuff about monkeys, robots, and zombies. Oh, and he also plans to take over the world. Check him out for yourself on his first two CDs, so you can say you knew all about him before he became Emperor of the Earth.
4-CD box set of Jonathan Coulton
The first four seasons...
Value: $40

Coulton is prolific and determined; beginning in September 2005 he started the ambitious "Thing a Week" project wherein he completed a new song every Friday. This box set collects the first four "seasons" of "Thing a Week," and includes such classics as "Re: Your Brains," amongst many, many others.

Learn about Star's art form...
Value: $100
Interested in getting into one of Star's many hobbies, interactive fiction (or text-based gaming, as some n00bs call it)? Here's a pack of four books that will tell you practically everything you need to get started. Second Person: Role Playing & Story in Games and Playable Media , edited by Pat Harrigan and Norah Wardrip-Fruim, is a collection of essays by game designers, authors, artists, and scholars about role playing and story in various types of games, from RPGs to card games to electronic literature. Twisty Little Passages: An Approach to Interactive Fiction by Nick Montfort is an analysis of IF from both gaming and literary perspectives, and looks at the history of the medium and current techniques used to create it. Once you've got the theory down, it's time to get building: The Inform Designer's Manual by Graham Nelson and The Inform Beginner's Guide by Roger Firth & Sonja Kesserich should provide all the information you need to start working with Inform, the most popular program for creating interactive fiction.
Universalis by Ralph Mazza (2)
The RPG for people who don't like RPGs...
Donor: Ralph Mazza
Value: $20
The RPG for people who don't like RPGs. Players have complete control over what happens in the story, and there's a lot less randomness involved (although you will still need some ten-sided dice). It's all about working together to tell a good story, and not at all about cross-referencing complex tables and doing lots of math. Fun!
The Shab Al-Hiri Roach by Jason Morningstar
Roleplaying in the style of Lovecraft...
Value: $20
An award-winning role-playing game in the style of the great horror author H.P. Lovecraft - if Lovecraft wrote dark comedies of manners that lampooned academia. The game asks the question, "Are you willing to swallow a soul-eating telepathic insect bent on destroying human civilization?" What if it would get you tenure? And if that doesn't sell you on the game, nothing will.

Personalized recording of "Star" by David Poe
A recording of Star made with ours in mind...
Donor: David Poe
Value: $varies
Contemporary indie pop singer-songwriter (and one of Star's "imaginaryrockstar boyfriends") David Poe has come through for us with a really amazing item here: a new recording of his song "Star," done with our own Star in mind, with the only copy going to the winner of this lot, to do with as they wish. Mr. Poe says: "I'll record it probably after it's auctioned ... and will personalize CDs for the winners too if you like." Lyrics from the song in question below:

In the sun of the world
Up where metal wings turn pink
There's a rumor of you

On your way to the store
Found a dollar in the snow
It was a fabulous commercial for you

You know cold it can be
Years of light ahead of me
Reflecting everything you se
Like a star outside my window

Like a star
Will you come to my window
You're like a star now
You're like a star

We have four of her books up for auction: a hardback copy of The Guy Not Taken, two softback copies of Good Night Nobody, one softback copy of Little Earthquakes, and one softback copy of Good In Bed. They have all also been autographed by the author, which means not only are they fun to read, they're also great keepsakes and collectibles.
Decemberists Show Posters (5)
Sea shanties and ghost stories...
Value: varies
Star loved lots of bands, but she had a special place in her heart for The Decemberists; you should have seen the way she danced with glee when she got her hands on their latest album! It's easy to see why, too; songs by The Decemberists tend to be sea shanties and ghost stories set long ago and far away, and their live show is theatrical and fun to the extreme. If you're a fan, too, you're bound to love these five beautiful posters from the band's recent European tour, all autographed by the artist, all hand-numbered, and all with an appropriately maritime theme.
Visit the Decemberists web site

Value: $149

The most popular portable digital music player on the planet, in its sexy, super-thin nano form - small, but not so small that it's really easy to lose. Lacrosse fans, this is your item. This is a Wings team photo autographed by Van Beek, who scored 26 points last year, with a season-high of five against Rochester. He was a first round draft pick for the Wings in 2004, and fifth overall. His favorite color is blue, his favorite food is Japanese, and his favorite TV shows are "The Family Guy" and "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." But the most telling piece of info about him? He led the team in penalty minutes last year with 72. Now that's a real Philly sports player right there: he hurts people.
Handknit Shawl
A handknit shawl from a close friend...
Value: $?
Here's a very nice item donated for auction by "Little" Sam Johnston, a close friend of Star's. It's a lovely plum and magenta shawl, handknit by Sam himself. He and the shawl were even featured in the Spring 2007 issue of Knitscene magazine! This is a very warm, personal item that's even famous in its own way; definitely worth a bid.
Gazella Prints (2)
Some lovely nautical flavor...
Donor: Gazela
Value: $?
Here we have two prints (one to go to the highest bidder, and the other to the second highest bidder on this lot) of a lovely painting of a historical ship docked at Penn's Landing, Philadelphia. Star worked on the ship recently. Did she help sail or preserve it, you ask? Hell no! She dressed up as a pirate and scared people on Halloween! Awesome. The painting isn't very scary, but it is a nice stormy sea scene that you'll enjoy hanging in your home.

Silent Auction Rules

1. As you arrive at the party, you'll be asked to sign the "Ship's Log."

2. Each line of the Ship's Log will be numbered; the number for the line you sign will be used to identify you for the silent auction.

3. You'll be given a card with your number on one side & a summary of the rules and payment information on the other. It's very important that you hang onto this card if you plan to bid!

4. During the party, make your way over to the auction area. When you find items you wish to bid on, write your number (not your name!) on the sheet next to the item, along with the dollar amount you'd like to bid - whole dollars only for bids, please.

5. Some or all of the items may have a minimum bid, so look carefully at the bid sheet before making a bid. Also, please make sure you're bidding at least more than the previous high bid.

6. Bidding for the silent auction will be open from 4pm until around 6:45pm. Make sure to check the bid sheet often during the party for the items you'd like to win - don't let some scurvy knave outbid you!

7. Around 7pm, we'll start announcing the winning bidder for each auction item! We'll call out the name & number for the highest bidder, so make sure you're paying attention!

8. You must be present to win your item! If you're not present, the next highest bidder will plunder your treasure... er, win the item.

9. You must pay in full before leaving with any items! If you cannot pay in full, the next highest bidder will swipe your booty... er, win the item.

10. Gold coins... er, cash and/or personal checks will be accepted by the end of the evening as payment for purchases, savvy?

11. Helpers will be on hand during the entire party to assist you with any questions you might have.

12. All proceeds raised from the silent auction will go towards the Star C. Foster Writer's Prize. This is an academic prize that will be awarded to a member of the graduating class of Star's alma mater (Central High School) who has demonstrated a talent and passion for creative writing and who has contributed to the literary community at the school.

13. Lots may be combined or separated at auction. All items shown here will be featured, but may be broken into separate lots or combined into single lots. Thank you for your understanding in this matter!

There will also be a raffle going on during the party and at the conclusion of the auction. If you wish to participate, pay just per ticket for your chance to win. Like the auction,

  • You must be present to claim your prize. If you're not present, another raffle ticket will be pulled.
  • Cash and/or personal checks will be accepted as payment for raffle tickets.
  • All proceeds raised from the raffle will go towards the Star C. Foster Writer's Prize.
