Year 25: About Alternatives to Fear

Alternatives to Fear was started in the early 1970s by Py Bateman, a black belt in Karate who saw that women needed alternatives to the fear of sexual assault. We were one of the first organizations in the U.S. to teach rape prevention classes for women -- and we're still thriving as we reach our 25th year! Over the last two decades, we have taught women, girls, teens, children, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.

Our curriculum incorporates decades of classroom experience. We've discovered that self defense techniques should be easy to learn and easy to remember, suit many body types, and work in many situations. We train people to think through scenarios -- and give them opportunities to practice, practice, practice. We pay particular attention to verbal self defense, acquaintance rape, and the emotional issues around sexual violence.

In twenty-five years, we've seen significant changes in the world. For instance, most big cities and counties now have rape crisis lines. But there's so much more to do. The world will only change if we make it change.

You deserve to be safe from rape. You can defend yourself -- and you're worth it.
